Periodontics-Treating Your Gums
Gum disease is usually caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. If plaque is not removed with daily brushing and cleaning between the teeth, gums become irritated and inflamed. The irritated gum tissue can separate from the teeth and form spaces called pockets. Bacteria then moves into the pockets where they continue to create irritation and infection. If left untreated, the process can continue until the bone and other tooth-supporting tissues are destroyed.
The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. It often results in gums that are red, swollen and may bleed easily. The good news is we can treat it right here in our office. Our Dental Hygienists can help get gums healthy by treating them with Gingivitis therapy, also known as, Periodontal therapy. Our hygienists will work to clean out the pockets around the teeth and tip the scales back in the favor of healthy gums.
In some cases due to bacteria or infection a more serious treatment is needed. Dr. Steckbauer is licensed to practice Laser Periodontal Therapy which is a minimally invasive method of treating gum disease and infection. The LANAP Procedure can be a welcomed option when more serious treatment is needed.
